Using Our Skills Wisely

HelenEncouragement, Friendship, Purpose, Reflection

These two passages reflect that God gives us all skills, and we can use them for the work of the kingdom.

The Lord chose Bezalel and filled him with wisdom and understanding. He was gifted with knowledge and all kinds of skills to complete the work. Then we read of Jesus relating a story about a businessman who was going on a journey. He gave each worker gold to invest according to the employee’s ability. Like anyone in business, he wanted these servants to invest this money wisely to produce a return on what he’d trusted them with. He only got angry with the one servant who didn’t try because he was afraid.

God wants us to try. He doesn’t ask us to become the best-of-the-best unless he’s equipped us with those skills. But he does want us to work with what he’s given us. That may mean we have to take classes, go to school, seek training, keep fit, eat healthily, learn from others, etc.

I was not a natural writer––I was a nurse––when God called this C-grade English student to write. But whom God calls, he equips. He sent opportunities to learn and people to teach me, but he also wanted me to practice what I was learning. So, I wrote, rewrote, and rewrote, again. I’m still not the best at grammar, but I’m learning. I’m not an expert or best-selling author, either. But I am willing to learn and use the opportunities God has given to me.

What are your talents? How do use them to serve the kingdom?

A love letter from God …

Dear lovely one,

I have equipped you to serve me in everything that you do. Whether that be as a wife, parent, foster carer, teacher, leader, friend, decorator, cookie maker, nurse, cleaner, engineer, etc. There are so many skills needed in the kingdom of heaven and I am asking you to nurture and develop the ones you have so that I can bless others as I have blessed you. I love it when we work together, and I love it when I see the joy of you working for me. If you find yourself in a place where you feel unequipped or even not in the right place … come to me and ask for my guidance. Maybe it’s time for a new opportunity and I can’t wait to show you.

I see you, my beloved; I love you. And I am with you always.

Love, God
